An Oxford-style debate is a structured form of argument where participants are asked to defend a clearly defined motion, regardless of whether it reflects their personal views. In that sense, it is partly an exercise in intellectual role-playing: speakers take on a position and argue it as convincingly as possible.

The debate question is intentionally provocative, which allows for arguments and discussions that traditional panel discussions often miss. The goal is not necessarily to determine who is “right,” but to challenge ideas, test reasoning, and explore the full spectrum of perspectives.

The two speakers will argue for and against the motion that AI agents should replace PhD students in research projects. Following opening statements and rebuttals, the audience will participate through questions and a live vote.

The session aims to provide an evidence-based discussion of the opportunities, risks, and implications of AI-driven research for the future of science and scientific training.
