Taking a Seat at the Table: Leadership & CV workshop

Organized by:

Thursday 8 October 11.00

Lead organizer: Federica Belmonte, Novo Nordisk,

What does leadership in data science mean and how do you show it in your work? In this interactive workshop, PhD students and early-career professionals will explore how everyday data science work reflects leadership in practice: framing problems, setting standards, shaping decisions, mentoring others, building trust, and collaborating across disciplines.

The workshop combines short talks from industry and academia experts, a moderated panel, and a hands-on CV activity. Participants will work on their own profile text, identify where their CV or application undersells their leadership potential, and practise turning data science contributions into clearer, stronger statements. With an interactive session with experts, peers, and AI tools, participants will leave with concrete edits, practical prompts, and next steps for building a more visible, authentic leadership profile.

Programme

Welcome (5 minutes)

Section 1 – Invited talks (25 minutes)
3 short presentations from invited speakers (~8 minutes each + brief Q&A), each illustrating a different leadership archetype and its relevance across academic and non-academic career paths.

Section 2 – Interactive activities (60 minutes)
Panel discussion (20 minutes). Moderated exchange with the speakers on how they “took space” in decision rooms, what resistance they faced, and how their profiles reflect or fail to reflect that work.

CV review & upgrade activity (30 minutes)
Pre-work: participants bring an electronic copy of their CV (laptop or tablet). Panel provides guidance on AI tools and their pitfalls in building CVs, including some examples of CVs that need fixes; participants peer-review each other’s CVs.

Wrap-up discussion (10 minutes)
Common patterns from the CV exercise are discussed, brief synthesis across the talks and panel is conducted.
