The Early Career Researcher’s Guide to Funding Your Own Research

In today’s academic landscape, successfully applying for research funding is a crucial skill for early career researchers — yet at the same time, it is often a blind spot of academic training. If you are a PhD or Postdoc, chances are high that you would gladly upgrade your funding application writing skills – and chances are also high that there are very few training opportunities for you to do so. This D3A session addresses this gap, specifically for the field of digitalization research.
We provide early career researchers with community-sourced seeds of information, motivation, and support for grant application writing. Our session combines a series of lightning talks and a hands-on exercise in small groups. Participants can benefit from the experience and viewpoints of a diverse group of scholars and funding agency decision makers, and gain a first understanding of what makes (or breaks) a successful funding application.
Gathering & organizers’ intro (5 min)
Lightning talks by a total of 4 invited speakers (40 min)
We will invite 2-3 researchers that will speak about their successful funding applications (at least 1 one of them speaking about horizon europe), and 1-2 evaluators from one of the four large research funding bodies in DK (nnf, villum, carlsberg, dff) that will speak about their daily bread of sussing out which funding applications should indeed get funded.
Bio break (5 min)
Hands-on session (40 min)
Find & correct the 10 mistakes in this fictional funding application in small breakout groups (5 min intro + 20 min group work + 15 min wrap-up in plenum)
Introductory: Suitable for beginners with little to no prior knowledge of the subject.
